New year’s resolutions are often personal goals surrounding fitness, finance and quitting bad habits. This year add a few resolutions to keep your home looking and functioning its best. Your home withstands wear and tear on a daily basis, especially during the colder months. As a homeowner, tasks seem to be endless. From changing a lightbulb to cleaning your gutters, there’s always something on your to-do list. However, stay ahead of last-minute home maintenance tasks by adding the following to your New Year’s Resolutions.
Inspect Your Foundation
Walk the interior and exterior perimeter of your home. Look for cracks, windows that won’t close and slopes in your flooring. These may indicate your foundation needs a repair. In addition, weakened concrete may be a sign of foundation issues. Don’t forget to grab your flashlight to check for possible termite damage. This might come in the form of wood shavings, holes or weakened wood. If these signs are present in your home, seek a professional opinion.
Clean Out Dryer Vent
Lint doesn’t only buildup in your dryer’s lint collector. Your dryer ducts need to be cleaned as well. Lint can cause a fire safety hazard. To clean, unplug dryer and turn off gas, take apart your dryer ducts and use a vent cleaning brush to pull out all of the lint. Once this is complete, reattach ducts and plug dryer cord back in. Move dryer to its original position being careful not to smash ducts or cords.
Reinforce Entry Door
In a few quick steps, you can reinforce your exterior doors to prevent burglaries. The key components of your door’s strength are the deadbolt, strike plates, screws and door jamb. Deadbolts are ranked on security and categorized into Grade 1, 2 or 3. Replace old deadbolts with a Grade 1 deadbolt. Pair your new deadbolt with hinge and jamb shields. These shields go over your deadbolt and should be secured with 3-inch screws. While you’re at it, replace your wimpy hinge screws with larger 3-inch screws. You can further reinforce your hinges with shields created for this purpose. Once this is complete, your door should be nearly impossible to kick down.
Improve Indoor Air Quality
Let in fresh air whenever possible. Open windows and use fans to circulate pollutants out and fresh air in. Vacuum carpets, rugs and upholstery regularly to prevent dust and pollutants from building up. The benefits of air duct cleanings are inconclusive. According to the EPA, you should only consider having them cleaned if you have vermin, mold or visible particles of dust and debris in your home.
